About Noleja

A technical background.
A reader’s perspective.

Independent technical writing for HVAC and mechanical engineering, backed by many years of experience in software environments.

Noel James

I’m Noel James, a freelance technical writer with more than 25 years’ experience documenting HVAC products, industrial equipment and software.

My background includes aircraft maintenance, installation, commissioning and service engineering. That practical experience informs how I write: with attention to what readers need to understand, verify and do.

Experience across hardware and software

My experience spans HVAC valves and actuators, software, and heavy industrial equipment for tube production, rolling and steelmaking. This broad engineering background helps me explain complex machinery and processes clearly.

My documentation experience covers valves, actuators, sensors, controllers and industrial machinery, alongside user guidance for interface-design software and energy management applications. I have also coordinated technical writing teams and supported terminology management, documentation standards and localisation.

Through Noleja Documentation Solutions, I help businesses create clear manuals, user guides, technical explanations and training content. HVAC and building automation are my main focus, supported by experience across engineering and software.

Software and structured documentation

I work with XML-based technical documentation and GitHub workflows, including branching and version control. These tools help teams manage documentation changes alongside software development.

I bring engineering knowledge and clear technical writing to software projects. I organize complex information, develop consistent terminology, and create documentation that users can follow.

Writing for the people using your products

I start with the reader’s task: what they need to achieve, what they already know and what information they need next. I work with subject-matter experts to develop accurate explanations, practical procedures and consistent terminology.

English is my native language, and I also speak and write German.

Gospel music for special occasions

Alongside my technical writing, I offer gospel singing for weddings and celebrations in NRW, with performances throughout Germany by arrangement.

The cover concept

RS-485 provides the road.
Each protocol has its own
rules of the road.

The orange bus represents Modbus RTU. The blue-green vehicles represent BACnet MS/TP. Both can use RS-485 as their physical communication layer.

Modbus RTU and BACnet MS/TP use the same road standard—RS-485—but follow different traffic rules on separate networks. RS-485 represents how the road is built; each protocol defines its own communication rules, including when devices take turns transmitting. The different vehicles distinguish the protocols, not their speed. The illustration is a metaphor, not a wiring diagram.

The meters and solar panels suggest smarter energy use. The display above the buildings represents analytics that can use device data. Its shield suggests protected access to that software layer; RS-485 alone does not encrypt the messages on either road.
